As we celebrate 30 years of transforming the Philippine franchise landscape, I am filled with both pride and reflection. When we first introduced franchising in the Philippines, the vision was simple yet profound: to create businesses, generate jobs, and help build a strong and vibrant middle class. Franchising, to me, was never just a business model—it was a tool for economic development and nation-building.

Looking back, the growth has been remarkable. From a handful of pioneering brands, the Philippine franchising sector has expanded into a dynamic ecosystem with a healthy mix of homegrown and international concepts. It has empowered thousands of entrepreneurs, provided livelihoods to millions of Filipinos, and contributed significantly to the country’s economic activity. In many ways, franchising has proven its potential as a democratizing force in business—allowing ordinary Filipinos to participate in enterprise ownership.
And yet, as with any success story, growth has also brought with it new challenges. When Growth Outpaces Discipline
The rapid expansion of franchising has, unfortunately, attracted not only serious entrepreneurs but also opportunists. We have seen the rise of shortcuts—concepts that are rushed to market without proper testing, systems that are incomplete or poorly documented, and franchisors who lack the capability or commitment to support their franchisees.
There are cases of overexpansion, where brands grow too quickly without the infrastructure to sustain their network. Franchisees are left unsupported, operations become inconsistent, and the brand suffers. Worse, there have been instances of outright scams and half-baked franchise offerings that take advantage of aspiring entrepreneurs.
These practices do more than harm individual investors—they erode trust in franchising as a whole. They threaten the very foundation of what we have worked hard to build over the past three decades.
If we are not careful, growth without discipline can become our greatest weakness.
Franchising as Partnership and Responsibility
At its core, franchising is not just about selling a business model. It is about forming a partnership.
A franchisor does not simply grant a brand name or a set of operating procedures. They take on the responsibility of nurturing their franchisees—guiding them, supporting them, and ensuring that they have the tools to succeed. In turn, franchisees commit to upholding the standards of the brand and delivering value to customers.
This relationship is built on trust.
When I first embraced franchising, it was guided by a personal mission: to do the greatest good for the greatest number of people. I believed—and continue to believe—that franchising can be a powerful engine for inclusive economic development. It can uplift families, create opportunities, and strengthen communities.
But this can only happen if franchising is practiced the right way.
We must never forget that behind every franchise agreement is a person—an entrepreneur who has invested not just money, but hope, time, and trust.
The Standards That Must Define the Future
As we move forward, it is no longer enough to celebrate growth. We must now focus on raising the standards of franchising in the Philippines. The next 30 years will not be defined by how fast we grow, but by how well we grow.
1. Ethical Practices
Integrity must be the cornerstone of every franchise system. Franchisors must present truthful, transparent information to prospective franchisees. There should be no exaggerated claims, no hidden costs, and no misleading promises. Ethical franchising protects not only investors but also the reputation of the entire industry.
2. Strong Systems
A franchise is only as strong as the system behind it. This includes well-documented operations, robust training programs, reliable supply chains, and continuous innovation. A concept must be proven, refined, and scalable before it is offered for franchising. Without strong systems, growth becomes fragile.
3. Franchisor–Franchisee–Customer Success Focus
True success in franchising is a three-way win. The franchisor must succeed, the franchisee must succeed, and the customer must be satisfied. If any one of these elements is neglected, the system will eventually fail. Franchising is sustainable only when value is created across all stakeholders.
4. Sustainable Scaling
Expansion should be strategic, not impulsive. Growth must be aligned with the franchisor’s capacity to support its network. It is better to grow steadily with strong foundations than to expand rapidly and risk collapse. Sustainable scaling ensures longevity and resilience.
The Next 30 Years
I grew up in a time when the Philippines was considered one of the leading economies in Asia—a commercial and educational hub in Southeast Asia. Over the years, however, we have seen our country fall behind due to missed opportunities and mismanagement.
This is why I have always believed in the potential of franchising as a tool for national development. Its ability to create businesses and jobs makes it uniquely positioned to contribute to inclusive growth.
But for franchising to fulfill this role, we must raise our standards.
To franchisors: build with integrity, invest in systems, and prioritize the success of your franchisees.
To franchisees: choose wisely, commit fully, and uphold the standards of your brand.
To industry leaders and institutions: continue to promote education, enforce best practices, and protect the credibility of franchising.
Let us not allow short-term gains to undermine long-term impact.
The next 30 years present an even greater opportunity—not just to expand, but to elevate. If we commit to excellence, franchising can help restore the Philippines’ position as a dynamic and inclusive economy. It can help build the strong middle class that our nation needs.
Beyond growth lies responsibility. Beyond expansion lies purpose.
Let us rise to the challenge—and ensure that franchising in the Philippines remains not only a driver of economic activity, but a force for good. #
