Francorp Eras: 30 Years of Transforming the Philippine Franchise Landscape

In 1996 -- in the midst of the Asian financial crisis -- Samie Lim, Bing Sibal-Limjoco, and Manuel Siggaoat took a bet on an industry the country barely understood. What followed was three decades of building the systems, standards, and industries that now transformed the Philippine franchise landscape.

Franchising was already established in the United States, but in the Philippines, it was still a new and unfamiliar idea. When the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis slowed traditional expansion, businesses began searching for a more resilient way to grow.

Franchising offered that path -- shifting growth from capital-driven expansion to system-driven scale. It allowed strong businesses to multiply through people, structure, and partnerships.

From this foundation came a mission that still guides Francorp today: Creating Jobs by Growing Brands from One to Many

From there, a new industry began to take shape -- one opportunity at a time, each revealing a different way franchising could transform a business, a brand, and a nation.

THE FOUNDATION ERA

Building the First Wave of Scalable Brands: The Rise of Food and Retail Franchises

"Before franchising could grow, businesses first had to learn how to think in systems."

The late 1990s presented a clear gap: the Philippines had great businesses, but almost none had the systems to replicate. The opportunity was in translating success into systems -- so it could be taught, repeated, and scaled.

Francorp played a key role in introducing franchising as a structured way of thinking about business growth. Food and retail became the natural starting point because they were visible, repeatable, and easier to standardize across locations.

This stage was less about expansion and more about education -- helping business owners understand that scalability required documentation, consistency, and operational discipline.

Key milestones during this era:

  • Emergence of franchising as an alternative growth model during the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis

  • Shift from company-owned expansion to franchise expansion

  • Franchising becoming a structured path for both expansion and owning a business

THE REGIONAL EXPANSION ERA

From Local Favorites to National Brands

"Franchising turned local success stories into national brands."

Many of the Philippines' strongest brands began as regional favorites -- deeply loved in their home cities but limited by geography. Their challenge was not demand, but scalability.

Franchising created the opportunity to bridge that gap. It allowed regional entrepreneurs to expand beyond their local markets by partnering with operators in other cities, while maintaining brand consistency through systems.

Recognizing this growing potential outside Metro Manila, Francorp expanded its presence by opening its Cebu and Davao offices in 2010 -- bringing franchising support closer to regional entrepreneurs and accelerating the development of provincial brands.

This transformed how Filipinos experienced brands. What was once only available in places like Cebu, Davao, Bohol, or Palawan became accessible nationwide. Regional identity was no longer a limitation -- it became a foundation for national growth.

Key milestones during this era:

  • Expansion of regional brands beyond their original markets

  • Transformation of local favorites into nationally accessible brands

  • Franchise partnerships enabling geographic scalability

  • Preservation of regional identity within national expansion

  • Increased consumer access to diverse provincial brands

THE HYPER-SCALE ERA

Building the 1,000-Store Blueprint through Kiosk Franchising

"Scalability is no longer about size -- it is about speed and structure."

The introduction of kiosk franchising reshaped the expansion strategy in the Philippines. With lower capital requirements and simplified operations, kiosk formats made it possible for brands to expand rapidly across high-traffic locations such as malls and transport hubs.

This model significantly increased accessibility for aspiring franchisees to own a franchise while enabling brands to scale at unprecedented speed. Expansion strategies shifted from gradual growth to structured mass replication.

As this momentum grew, the need for proper guidance and matching became more critical. U-Franchise Sales and Management helped scale this movement by providing professional franchise consultations to aspiring franchisees -- ensuring they are matched with the right franchise brands based on their goals, capacity, and readiness.

However, this level of scaling also required stronger systems -- tight operational controls, consistent training, and standardized execution became essential.

Key milestones during this era:

  • Emergence of kiosk-based franchise formats

  • Lower investment threshold for franchise ownership

  • Rapid expansion across malls and high-traffic areas

  • Increased accessibility for new entrepreneurs

  • Need for stronger systems to support high-volume scaling

THE GLOBAL GROWTH ERA

From Local Brands to Global Franchise Icons

"Filipino franchise brands are not just for local growth -- they are built for global relevance and reach."

As franchising matured in the Philippines, it became a powerful bridge to global expansion. Strong local brands were no longer confined to domestic growth; they were able to enter international markets, driven by both overseas demand and structured franchise systems.

This era was powered by two forces: the global Filipino community and the increasing competitiveness of homegrown brands. Franchising provided the structure to expand abroad while maintaining consistency, quality, and brand identity.

Several Filipino brands have successfully established international presence, such as Max's Restaurant, Oryspa, Potato Corner, Shawarma Shack, Turks, Avocadoria, Andok's, Bench, Bo's Coffee, Goldilocks, Jollibee, and Karimadon.

This proves that Filipino brands can compete -- and win -- on a global stage when supported by strong systems.

THE NEW FRONTIER ERA

The Next Wave of Franchise Innovation

"The future of franchising is not defined by industry. It works wherever there is a replicable service, a defined customer experience, and the ability to systemize."

Franchising today is expanding into entirely new categories. Beyond traditional food and retail, industries such as fintech, agri-tech, construction, microlending, events management, business coaching -- and increasingly beauty and wellness -- are now exploring franchising as a scalable growth model.

As part of this evolution, Francorp brings in ActionCOACH Business Coaching as a way to further support this mission -- helping entrepreneurs not just franchise their business, but build stronger, more scalable companies.

Once viewed as highly operator-dependent, these businesses are now being structured for replication through standardized treatments, training systems, and operational protocols. This allows consistency in customer experience across multiple locations, even in service-driven environments.

This shift is redefining what can be franchised, opening doors for more entrepreneurs and more industries to participate in scalable growth.

TO THE NEXT 30 YEARS

What began as a way to replicate successful businesses has now evolved into something far greater -- an engine for national growth, industry transformation, and global opportunity. Across every era, franchising has continued to prove one thing: when a business is built on the right systems, it can go beyond limits.

From local pioneers to regional leaders, from kiosk models to global expansions, and now into entirely new frontiers of services and innovation -- franchising has consistently reshaped what growth looks like.

Franchising continues to evolve. And so does the opportunity it creates -- for businesses, for entrepreneurs, and for the next generation of growth.

Grow from One to Many.
